Italian Renaissance ring in gold and rock crystal, Italy, 15th century
The ring, dating between the 15th and 16th centuries, is a refined example of Renaissance goldsmithing, crafted in chased gold with a central rock crystal stone. This material, valued for its transparency and purity, held both symbolic and protective significance. The box setting safeguards the stone, while the chased shoulders with ornamental motifs highlight the craftsmanship of Renaissance goldsmiths. XRF analysis confirms the alloyβs compatibility with an ancient period, attesting to its authenticity. This jewel represents a perfect synthesis of art, technique, and Renaissance symbolism.
Similar examples are preserved in the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum. Designers such as Etienne Delaune and the treatises of Benvenuto Cellini provide valuable insights into the goldsmithing techniques of the period.
