Pair of Italian Renaissance gold pins, 15th - 16th century
This pair of gold pins dates back to the period between the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. They were used to fix aristocratic hairstyles and feature a long slender shaft with a relief upper decoration, inspired by natural forms, shows an influence from late-Byzantine goldsmithing.
These accessories were very popular among Renaissance noblewomen, often used in pairs to provide balance and stability to hairstyles. The presence of two identical pins suggests a symmetrical use, perhaps to secure a veil, and they could belong to a nuptial or ceremonial set. Analysis of the alloy confirms their dating to the 15th century.
