With the scientific consultancy of Fabrizio Canto, the Department handles antique, vintage and classic frames from the Renaissance, Baroque, and 18th to 19th centuries. The Department's staff specializes in the in-depth study, cataloguing, and valuation of collectible frames, aiming to enhance their value in dedicated sales.
Alongside a meticulous analysis of the aesthetic and functional qualities of each piece, our team of experts focuses on the strategic placement of items on both the Italian and international markets, ensuring broad visibility and accurate economic valuation. The role of the frame is strategic, serving as a fundamental element in highlighting the beauty of antique and modern paintings, drawing the attention towards them.
Frames also have the power to emphasise the details of the artwork and create a dialogue between the image and its context. Additionally, the right frame can enrich the visual experience, adding depth and prestige to the artwork.
The Department publishes monographic catalogues of antique frames at auction. The private sale is reserved for high-value antique frames, or frames of particular historical and artistic significance. The Department of Antique Frames also offers a selection of frames across various price ranges, available for purchase outside of auctions.
Following in the footsteps of Franco Sabatelli, Fabrizio Canto is one of the few specialists in antique frames active in Italy. His book Frames: 15th–18th Century is a key reference for collectors. From his studio in Rome, he has been providing consultancy services to enthusiasts from around the world for over 20 years. He is also a consultant and collaborator for the National Gallery in London.
