Books, Autographs, Memorabilia

The Department of Books, Autographs, and Memorabilia, directed by Alessandro Pagliari and Paolo Mecucci, caters to enthusiasts and collectors of books, bibliophiles, philologists, and all those who appreciate the written word in all its forms. Antique books serve as authentic bridges between the past and present, bearing witness to the epochs that have shaped our world and preserving memory, culture, ideas, and knowledge to be passed down through generations.

The antique book auction catalogues feature manuscripts, unique or rare antique books, collectible books, incunabula, first and original editions, signed volumes, artist books, letters and autograph documents, as well as rare and historical documents.

Bertolami Fine Art's books auction proposals are further enriched by an extensive selection of works on paper, appealing to those who value literary and documentary heritage. These include antique and fine geographic maps, historical memorabilia, signed photographs, and collectibles related to historical, political, cultural, artistic, musical, cinematic, and sports figures and events.

The Department of Books, Autographs, and Memorabilia also provides valuation for books, autographs, and historical objects, essential for determining the market value of items intended for sale.
Additionally, our experts offer specialised appraisals in the field of antique books and historical documents, which are indispensable for insurance purposes, inheritance settlements, asset divisions, donations, or simply for understanding the cultural value of one’s collection. The Department also maintains a curated selection of antique and modern books, autographs, and memorabilia across various price ranges, available for purchase outside of auction sales.

Musicologist and expert in books and manuscripts, Massimo Fino served as a consultant for Christie’s International in the field of musical manuscripts and autographs from 1986 to 2006. He is the founder of LIM (Libreria Musicale Italiana), a renowned publishing house specializing in musicology, where he continues to serve as an editorial consultant. He has published numerous articles in newspapers and magazines, and co-authored Musica/Città with Carlo Majer for Laterza, focusing on Luciano Berio’s Maggio Musicale. Since 1999, he has been the artistic director of the Opera Barga Festival.

With a diverse academic background, Paolo Mecucci holds degrees in Philosophy as well as in Composition and Orchestral Conducting. He was the last student of American composer Robert W. Mann. His interests and expertise range from musicology to bibliophilia and the collection of antique paintings. As a specialist in collectible books, manuscripts, and geographic maps, he collaborated with Philobiblon—an eminent international bookstore with locations in Rome, Milan, and New York—from 2004 to 2008. He later established his own international bibliographic studio.
