The Department of Silver, Ivory, and Coral focuses its research on a wide range of applied arts, with particular attention to highly specialized niche sectors: ivory, antique coral, icons, and Russian art objects.
Meticulous analyses, strict selection criteria, and thorough evaluations conducted by the Department’s experts lend Bertolami auctions an exceptional character, transforming the sales into unique opportunities to acquire precious antique silver, rare ivory, coral of extraordinary beauty, and collectible items crafted from tortoiseshell, horn, or mother-of-pearl—some of these pieces being virtually impossible to find elsewhere.
We carefully curate silver items with exceptional attention to detail and quality, including frames, mirrors, and jewelry boxes, as well as sculptures and table clocks, candelabras and oil lamps, centerpieces and fruit bowls, vases, and other everyday objects such as trays, tureens, and sauce boats. Also featured are elegant tea and coffee sets, wine coolers, coffee pots, tableware, and other art de la table items, and much more.
The Department’s auctions also include icons, sacred art, and Russian art objects such as colorful kovsh, repoussé and gilt silver samovars, holy water fonts, decorative and sacred crosses, ceremonial and decorative objects, as well as ivory or horn tankards.
Special mention is reserved for ivory and tortoiseshell items, sublime examples of craftsmanship and applied arts, which we aim to preserve and celebrate through our auctions. Among the ivory pieces handled by the Department, intricately carved items, finely crafted sculptures, and decorative artifacts stand out. The Department offers appraisal services, diagnostic analyses, and the preparation of antiquity certificates necessary for obtaining licenses issued by the C.I.T.E.S. Certification Service of the Italian Forestry Corps.
These licenses cover objects made from ivory, coral, tortoiseshell, leather, and materials derived from endangered wildlife species, as listed in the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), implemented in Italy through Law 150/1992, later amended, and decrees by the Ministry of the Environment on April 19, 1996, and April 26, 2001. The Department provides various purchase options for collectible items offered by the Department of Silver, Ivory, and Coral. In addition to auction sales, items may also be acquired through private negotiations, a method often reserved for pieces of particular historical, artistic, and economic value. The Department also maintains a curated selection of antique and modern silverware, ivory, coral, icons, and Russian art objects at all price ranges, available for purchase outside of auctions.
