Under the direction of Danilo Quintarelli, the Department handles stamps and historical postal documents, with particular focus on the philately of the ancient Italian States. The Department of Stamps and Postal History was established to give all philately enthusiasts and collectors of historical postal correspondence the opportunity to acquire rare, unpublished, or hard-to-find pieces on the market.
Small pieces of paper full of history and value, collectible stamps have the power to fascinate and evoke deep emotions in collectors, as they are true treasures to preserve.
The history of philately is closely tied to the history of postal correspondence. The introduction of the stamp in the 19th century, as a method and value for postage, not only revolutionized the postal system but also sparked the interest of early collectors. From a simple means of payment for postal service, the stamp soon became an object of fascination for enthusiasts, giving rise to a collecting tradition that continues to this day. Among the historical postal documents most frequently offered at Bertolami auctions are historical letters, envelopes, and postcards.
These pieces, in addition to telling the history of postal shipments, also testify to the evolution of civil society, mentality, customs, and technologies over the centuries. The auction catalogs for stamps present the lots in two different ways: some are grouped based on specific characteristics, such as the period of issue, or individually for stamps of higher value. The latter are also reserved for private sale, a method of sale that guarantees confidentiality and a fully personalized buying experience for the most discerning collectors.
The experts in the Department offer free evaluations and specialist appraisals, services reserved for those who own stamps and historical postal documents and wish to sell them. We evaluate individual stamps and entire collections, new and canceled stamps, philatelic precursors, pre-philatelic letters, and more generally, items that, having been sent through postal services, are part of postal history collecting. Request a preliminary estimate of the stamps and postcards in your possession directly from the online form on our website.
The Department always presents a wide selection of stamps and postal documents, in various price ranges, that can be purchased outside of auction.
